Each POS software developer had to write their own hardware interfaces. Often these were specific to manufacturer or even model, and new devices or models were not supported until the next software release. This meant a very limited choice of devices.
POS applications can easily work with any device that has a UnifiedPOS-compliant driver. New models are supported out of the box. This means many more choices for the retailer.
