ARTS -NRF Retail Standards Summit a Success

The Retail Standards Summit, which took place October 1 in London, was a great success. More than 80 people attended the Summit to hear presentations on the value of standards and how to implement them.

Keynote speaker Peter Burrows, senior vice president and CIO for Reebok International, provided the opening presentation, Why Reebok Selects Standards-Based Solutions. Reebok insists that applications - such as their recently selected POS and Digital Asset Management systems - follow standards to ease integration and provide flexibility for the future.

Brian Kilcourse, director of research for RSA Advisory Services, made a compelling case that the infrastructure is the IT strategy, and an infrastructure built on standards provides maximum flexibility and return on investment.

Simon Langford, Manager of Global RFID Strategy for Wal-Mart, closed out the conference with a presentation that provided attendees with the latest information about Wal-Mart's plans and expectations for RFID in enhancing retail operations for both suppliers and retailers.

The message of the Summit was that standards do make a difference. Standards helped Reebok achieve lower IT costs. A standards-based infrastructure is the underlying critical success factor for businesses to manage change and to use IT as a strategic advantage. The enormous potential of RFID depends on a single worldwide standard. All presentations are posted on nrf-arts.org and will be sent to attendees and ARTS members on CD.

ARTS would like to take this opportunity to thank our sponsors 360Commerce, Kurt Salmon Associates, Manhattan Associates, PCMS International and Triversity for making the Summit possible.
