Comparison Shopping Engines (CSEs) are constantly being challenged to process and display accurate product information from retailers. Industry estimates show that rejection rates for loading product information can be as high as 50%. To solve this problem, ARTS, the standards division of NRF, has created a standard data feed format as an XML schema. If adopted and implemented by CSEs, this new standard will dramatically reduce this reject rate. In addition, this standard will reduce overall IT hours in creating, sending and correcting product data. Of equal importance, it will allow CSEs to dedicate more time editing product data to produce quality click stream information that guides the retailer's selection of products for posting. This new ARTS CSE standard proposes to solve these problems by creating common formats based on analysis of those used by many industry leaders.
XML is the language of the internet for communicating data. ARTS has chosen this technology over the current comma-delimited format for sending product data to simplify the conversion to these standards and provide flexibility for future changes. Learn more by reading An Introduction to XML. Like any proposed standard, CSE must be widely adopted in order to benefit the online retail industry. To encourage adoption, ARTS has created the CSE Commitment Registry showing which companies have committed to implement the new standards and when. Are your partners on the list? Has your company committed to implementation? If not, please review the new standard CSE process/schema and sign up today to help yourself and the industry.
